The Goddess of Food

The Goddess of Food

On the full moon of the month of mṛgaśirṣa we celebrate Annapūrṇa Devī, the mother of food & nourishment. She is a form of Parvati, the earth mother, the partner to Śiva. She nourishes us with every bite... and in particular she nourishes the yogic seeker who needs to be sustained on the path of awakening.

In the birth story of Annapūrṇa Devī we learn how she came to be, and how she taught Śiva a lesson about Śakti & nature in the process.

*The story is clipped from a longer class and teaching inside the Nectar of Time container that is rich with monthly veda storytelling, recipes, lifestyle, philosophy, vedic astrology and more.

The moon's Sanskrit name is "Soma Deva", a full moon is considered most nourishing, and the full moon in the vedic month of Mrgashirsha {December} is Annapūrṇa Devī's birthday. This Mrgashirsha is symbolized by Soma. So it is the perfect time to celebrate the one who nourishes. Soma means "what swells". It is the nectar of immortality, the juice of life, the great principle of nourishment and nurturance in all of nature at every level, from subtle to gross. Soma means that which expands, supports and increases vitality.

Kaya's Ghee Recipe

Of all foods, perhaps the one most closely connected to soma nectar is ghee. Ghee is a sacred food and celebrated symbol of auspiciousness, nourishment and healing. It is used in the daily rituals of both cooking and worship.

I was raised making ghee and using it in our family recipes. Each family and individual seems to have their own method for getting it just right. We love the listening method!
